Area home sales down 23%, Daily Press - April 24, 2008 "The number of homes sold in Hampton Roads in the first quarter of 2008 continued to slide as prices held flat. The sales decline was especially pronounced in the Williamsburg area, which includes upper York and James City counties. A 45 percent drop in the number of homes sold in Williamsburg, compared with a year earlier, was the largest of the 22 areas tracked by the Virginia Association of Realtors. Preliminary plans OK'd for Quarterpath project, Daily Press - April 18, 2008 "Williamsburg planning commissioners approved preliminary plans for the mammoth Quarterpath at Williamsburg project Wednesday while assuring residents crucial details would still need to be OK'd before it goes forward. Of specific concern to officials and some citizens is the proposal's number of homes, which total more than 1,300 - or about 40 percent more units than a previous set of plans. But the preliminary plans filed for city review are only to evaluate issues such as infrastructure. Commissioners were emphatic in noting that Wednesday's unanimous decision was not a vote on the number of dwellings..." James City cuts spending 2.6%, Virginia Gazette - April 13, 2008 "A flat real estate market and state budget cuts reduced the county budget for the first time in memory. It will drop $4.6 million, or 2.6%, from this year to $169.9 million starting July 1. Property taxes will remain at 77 cents for the next twoyears to avoid political backlash. Budget would cut funding for schools, Daily Press - April 12, 2008 "Williamsburg-area schools would get substantially less funding than officials planned for the upcoming fiscal year if the James City County budget proposal released Friday is approved. County Administrator Sandy Wanner's proposed plans provide $15.5 million less in capital funds - and about $275,000 less in operating funds - than district officials expect to receive next fiscal year.
